Unsentimental City
My parents took hundreds of pictures of their three decades in the UAE. They fill enormous, leather bound family albums, and those albums fill boxes and boxes in the shed at the bottom of their garden. For this project, I started re-visiting the places in those photos, using my parents’ archive as a jumping off point into exploring the city again, two decades later.
Many of the places have changed beyond recognition.
This project is an inter-generational scrapbook that looks at my family’s story in the context of an ever changing and rapidly expanding cityscape. It’s the story of Dubai’s growth, and the story of the thousands of foreigners who left behind memories in this unsentimental city.
